What causes premature birth?

It's not always possible to explain the causes of premature birth and why it happens. Factors such as infection can result in prematurely born babies but it is often more complicated than one single reason. There are ongoing studies to understand how premature births can be prevented.  Some known reasons for premature birth include Infection, Pre-eclampsia (a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, often the kidneys), gestational diabetes, water breaking early, problems with the placenta, problems with the cervix, multiple pregnancies , problems with the bay's development  antiphospholipid antibody syndrome  (a condition where the body's immune system makes antibodies that attack and damage its own tissues or cells)., and lifestyle factors such as mother's weight, smoking and alcohol and drug use, poor diet and inappropriate spacing of births.

Many mothers of premature babies say they suffer from feelings of terrible guilt, wondering what they did wrong and if they are to blame. The truth is that in the vast majority of cases there is nothing you could have done to prevent premature birth.
